A refined surimono woodblock print by Kubo Shunman, depicting a go board and accessories, accompanied by traditional Japanese calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Kubo Shunman is a fine example of surimono, a genre of privately commissioned prints often exchanged among members of poetry circles in Edo-period Japan. Unlike commercial prints produced for mass consumption, surimono were crafted with high-quality paper and sophisticated printing techniques, such as embossing and metallic pigments, to reflect the refined tastes of their patrons.
The composition focuses on a go board, known as a goban, positioned centrally. The board is decorated with a pattern of paulownia leaves, a motif associated with status and elegance. Beside the board sit two black bowls containing the game stones, with several pieces scattered across the surface, suggesting a game recently in progress. A folded fan rests behind the board, adding a sense of casual sophistication to the arrangement. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper portion of the print identifies this as a collaborative work, where the visual art complements the accompanying kyoka, or comic verse, written by members of a poetry group.
Shunman was a versatile artist, known for his work as a painter, print designer, and poet. His style is characterised by a subtle use of colour and a focus on domestic or literary subjects. In this piece, the artist employs a muted palette, allowing the focus to remain on the textures of the objects and the calligraphic lines of the text. The print captures a quiet moment of leisure, reflecting the cultural interests of the literati class in early nineteenth-century Japan. The precision of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the objects demonstrate the technical skill involved in the production of surimono, where the quality of the impression was paramount to the appreciation of the work.
