Penfield's poster for the midsummer issue of Outing magazine, advertising the publication's coverage of summer sports and outdoor activities. The design reflects the seasonal focus on warm-weather recreation that drove the magazine's highest-selling issues.
Summer issues of Outing covered yachting, swimming, cycling, and countryside excursions. The midsummer number was a key commercial edition, timed to coincide with the height of the outdoor recreation season when the magazine's affluent readership was most actively engaged in the sports it covered. Penfield's poster would have been displayed at newsstands and sporting goods shops that carried the magazine.
The midsummer theme allowed Penfield to use his brightest colour palettes and lightest compositions. His summer work across all publications shares a common quality: open space, simplified backgrounds, and figures dressed in white or pale colours. This was partly aesthetic and partly practical; lighter colours printed more cleanly in the lithographic process and stood out against the cluttered visual environment of a typical 1890s newsstand.
Often called the father of the American poster, Penfield served as art director of Harper's Magazine from 1890 to 1901, producing over 100 cover designs during that period. His style drew on Japanese woodblock printing and the French affiche tradition: flat areas of colour, bold outlines, and minimal detail. He became one of the most recognised illustrators of the American Art Nouveau movement, and his wartime posters remain some of the most widely studied examples of early 20th-century graphic propaganda.
This fine art reproduction is printed on museum-grade stock, faithful to the original's bold colours and graphic simplicity.
