A traditional Japanese ink painting of an owl perched on a branch, featuring calligraphic inscriptions and soft, layered ink washes.
This work by Tsuda Bensaku, an artist active during the early Edo period, presents a study of an owl perched upon a gnarled branch. The composition follows the traditional Kacho-ga format, which focuses on birds and flowers. The owl is rendered with soft, layered ink washes that suggest the texture of its plumage, while the eyes are depicted with a subtle, contemplative quality. The branch itself is executed with more vigorous, calligraphic brushwork, providing a contrast to the rounded, static form of the bird.
The upper portion of the scroll features calligraphic inscriptions, a common element in Japanese hanging scrolls that integrates poetry or commentary with the visual image. The use of negative space is deliberate, allowing the subject to occupy the lower centre of the composition without clutter. The muted palette, dominated by shades of ink grey and the warm, aged tone of the paper, reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where restraint and technical precision were highly regarded.
Tsuda Bensaku is known for his contributions to the artistic climate of the 17th century, a time when Japanese painting began to shift away from purely religious themes toward more secular, observational subjects. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to capture the character of the owl through minimal means. The work remains a clear example of the ink-wash tradition, where the economy of the brush stroke is used to convey both form and mood. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the print. This reproduction captures the nuances of the original ink application, ensuring that the delicate gradients of the owl's feathers and the sharp, angular lines of the branch are preserved with clarity.
