A traditional Zen Buddhist ink painting by Sekkyakushi, depicting a herdsman and ox as a metaphor for the path to enlightenment.
This ink painting by the Japanese artist Sekkyakushi depicts a traditional oxherding scene, a subject deeply embedded in Zen Buddhist iconography. The composition features a herdsman guiding an ox, a metaphor for the taming of the human mind and the pursuit of enlightenment. The artist employs a minimalist approach, using varying densities of ink wash to define the form of the animal and the figure of the herdsman.
The background remains largely empty, a technique common in East Asian ink wash painting that invites the viewer to contemplate the space between the subjects. A single pine branch extends from the upper edge, providing a subtle anchor for the scene. The brushwork is economical, focusing on the essential lines that convey movement and character rather than realistic detail.
Sekkyakushi, active during the Muromachi period, worked within the tradition of suibokuga, or ink wash painting. This style prioritises the expressive quality of the brush stroke and the tonal range of black ink. The work reflects the influence of Chinese Chan painting, which arrived in Japan through Zen monasteries. The ox and the herdsman are rendered with a sense of quietude, consistent with the meditative practices associated with the period. The paper shows signs of age, with a muted, warm tone that complements the monochromatic palette. This piece is a representative example of the spiritual and aesthetic values of medieval Japanese art, where the simplicity of the image serves as a vehicle for philosophical reflection.
