A refined woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting a Java sparrow perched on a flowering magnolia branch, created during the 1830s.
This woodblock print belongs to a series of large-format bird and flower studies, known as kacho-ga, produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the 1830s. The composition features a Java sparrow, often referred to as a paddy bird, perched upon a flowering magnolia branch. Hokusai employs a refined colour palette, utilising muted blues for the foliage and soft, natural tones for the bird, set against a pale, neutral background.
The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of the woodblock medium, particularly in the delicate registration of the lines and the subtle application of colour gradients. The magnolia blossoms are rendered with a sense of organic movement, their petals curving naturally around the central branch. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy in the upper right quadrant provides a poetic accompaniment to the visual subject, a common convention in Edo-period print culture.
Unlike his more dramatic depictions of waves or mountains, this work focuses on the quiet observation of nature. The bird is captured in a moment of stillness, its form balanced by the weight of the blossoms. The print reflects the technical precision of the period, where the collaboration between the artist, the woodcarver, and the printer resulted in works of high clarity. The composition avoids excessive clutter, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the avian subject and the botanical elements. This piece remains a representative example of Hokusai's later career, during which he turned his attention toward the natural world with renewed focus and technical control.
