A botanical illustration by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, 'Paeonia Flagrans Peony' showcases the artist's skill in capturing the delicate details of the peony flower through stipple engraving and hand-colouring.
Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) was a Belgian artist and botanist, known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers at the Château de Malmaison, many of which were published as large, hand-finished stipple engravings. He was nicknamed 'the Raphael of flowers' and gained international recognition for his precise botanical documentation rendered with artistic flair. Redouté's patrons included Queen Marie Antoinette and Empress Joséphine. 'Paeonia Flagrans Peony' exemplifies Redouté's meticulous approach. The peony is depicted with careful attention to detail, from the delicate, layered petals of the white flower to the veined green leaves. A second flower, in a contrasting pale purple, adds depth to the composition. The stipple engraving technique, combined with hand-colouring, allows for subtle gradations of tone and texture, capturing the plant's natural form with scientific accuracy and aesthetic appeal.
