This work represents a fragment of the Sanbō e-kotoba, or Illustrations and Explanations of the Three Jewels, attributed to the poet and calligrapher Minamoto no Toshiyori. The Tōdaiji-gire, as these specific fragments are known, derive their name from their historical association with the Tōdaiji temple in Nara. The text is written in a fluid, cursive script that exemplifies the aesthetic sensibilities of the late Heian period.
The calligraphy is executed in ink upon paper that features a subtle, printed pattern of scrolling vines and floral motifs. This decorative background, known as karakami, provides a textured surface that interacts with the ink strokes.
