A museum-grade reproduction of the Tōdaiji Fragment, featuring elegant Heian-period calligraphy on patterned paper by Minamoto no Toshiyori.
This work is a fragment of the Sanbō ekotoba, or Illustrations and Explanations of the Three Jewels, a significant Buddhist text from the Heian period. Attributed to the poet and calligrapher Minamoto no Toshiyori, this piece is known as the Tōdaiji-gire, reflecting its historical association with the Tōdaiji temple. The manuscript displays the refined kana script characteristic of the era, where characters flow with a rhythmic, cursive grace.
The paper itself is a notable feature, decorated with subtle, repeating patterns that provide a textured backdrop for the ink. These decorative elements, often applied using woodblocks or stencils, demonstrate the aesthetic sensibilities of the Japanese aristocracy during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The ink remains clear, showing the variation in pressure and speed that defines the calligrapher's hand.
As a fragment, this page offers a glimpse into the production of religious and literary manuscripts in medieval Japan. The text serves as a record of Buddhist teachings, yet it functions equally as an object of visual art. The balance between the vertical columns of text and the patterned paper creates a harmonious composition. This print captures the aged quality of the original, including the subtle discolouration and texture of the paper, allowing for an appreciation of the historical materiality of the document. It is a study in the intersection of literature, religion, and design, representing a period when the written word was elevated through careful presentation and artistic execution.
