A high-quality reproduction of a sixteenth-century Quranic folio by the master calligrapher Ahmed Karahisari, featuring intricate gold illumination and Muhaqqaq script.
This print reproduces a folio from the celebrated Mushaf of Ahmed Karahisari, a monumental Quranic manuscript commissioned during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. Karahisari, a master of the Ottoman school, is recognised for his development of the Muhaqqaq script, which is displayed here with exceptional precision. The composition balances large-scale, bold calligraphic lines with smaller, secondary text blocks, creating a rhythmic visual hierarchy across the page.
The illumination surrounding the text blocks features traditional Ottoman motifs, including floral scrolls and geometric medallions. These decorative elements are executed in gold leaf and mineral pigments, providing a contrast to the stark black ink of the script. The margins contain marginal markers, known as juz, which indicate sections of the Quran. These circular ornaments are typical of high-status manuscripts produced in the imperial workshops of Istanbul during the sixteenth century.
Karahisari’s approach to page layout is notable for its clarity and structural rigour. The interplay between the negative space of the parchment and the density of the ink demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of balance. This work represents the zenith of Ottoman book arts, where the technical skill of the calligrapher meets the decorative refinement of the illuminator. The print captures the texture of the original paper and the metallic sheen of the gold leaf, offering a clear view of the brushwork and the precision of the letterforms. It is a study in the harmony of text and ornament, reflecting the aesthetic standards of the sixteenth-century Ottoman court.
