A fine art print of a masterwork by Sheikh Hamdullah, featuring precise Ottoman Naskh script and gold illumination.
This work represents the refined aesthetic of the Ottoman school of calligraphy, attributed to Sheikh Hamdullah. As a master of the craft, Hamdullah is credited with refining the six scripts (Aqlam al-Sitta) and establishing a distinct Ottoman style that moved away from the earlier Yaqut al-Musta'simi tradition. The composition features a central panel of large, bold script set against a background of delicate, illuminated floral motifs in gold. This is flanked by a column of smaller, precise Naskh script, which displays the rhythmic balance and clarity for which Hamdullah was known.
The page is framed by multiple borders, including a textured, marbled paper margin that provides a neutral contrast to the gilded central area. The use of gold leaf and subtle pigments demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with the imperial workshops of the period. The interplay between the heavy, sweeping lines of the larger script and the disciplined, smaller text creates a visual hierarchy that guides the eye across the page. Each element, from the gold-filled rosettes used as punctuation marks to the precise ink work, reflects the technical rigour required in the production of high-quality manuscripts during the late 15th and early 16th centuries.
This print captures the tactile quality of the original parchment and the metallic sheen of the gold illumination. It serves as an example of the intersection between literary tradition and visual art in the Islamic world. The balance of negative space and decorative elements ensures that the text remains the primary focus, while the surrounding ornamentation provides a sense of luxury and order. This piece is suitable for those interested in the history of writing, Islamic art, or the development of typographic aesthetics in the pre-modern era.
