A cityscape by French artist Maurice Utrillo, 'Paintshop at Saint-Ouen' features buildings lining a street in the Parisian suburb of Saint-Ouen, rendered with a muted palette and visible brushstrokes.
Maurice Utrillo, born Maurice Valadon, was a French painter known for his cityscapes of Paris, particularly Montmartre. His early life was unconventional; he was the son of artist Suzanne Valadon, and his paternity was never definitively established. Utrillo struggled with mental illness and alcoholism throughout his life, and it was reportedly on the advice of a doctor that he began to paint. His artistic career spanned several periods, including the 'White Period' (c. 1910-1914), characterised by the use of white paint and textured surfaces. 'Paintshop at Saint-Ouen' depicts a street scene in the Parisian suburb of Saint-Ouen. The composition features buildings lining the street, rendered with a muted palette and visible brushstrokes. The paintshop itself is distinguished by its colourful facade, contrasting with the more subdued tones of the surrounding buildings. The sky is overcast, adding to the overall atmosphere of the scene. A lone figure walks along the street, providing a sense of scale and human presence.
