A detailed engraving by Hendrick Goltzius depicting the mythological pursuit of the nymph Syrinx by the god Pan.
This engraving by Hendrick Goltzius depicts the classical myth of Pan and Syrinx, a narrative drawn from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The composition captures the moment of pursuit, where the nymph Syrinx flees from the amorous god Pan, seeking refuge near the river Ladon. Goltzius employs his characteristic technical precision to render the figures and the surrounding reeds, which are central to the transformation that follows in the myth. The musculature of Pan is rendered with a sense of tension, while the figure of Syrinx conveys a dynamic sense of motion and distress.
In the foreground, a river deity reclines, observing the scene with a sense of detachment. The background includes smaller figures, providing a sense of scale and narrative continuity. Goltzius was a master of the burin, and his ability to create varied textures through hatching and cross-hatching is evident here. The lines define the anatomy of the figures and the organic forms of the vegetation with equal clarity. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print provides the classical context for the scene, a common practice in print series of the late sixteenth century.
This work reflects the Northern Mannerist interest in complex poses and mythological subjects. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and sophisticated artifice associated with the period. Goltzius, who was based in Haarlem, was instrumental in disseminating these stylistic traits across Europe through his prolific output of prints. This specific engraving demonstrates his command over light and shadow, using the white of the paper to suggest volume and form within the dense, linear environment of the riverbank.
