This fan painting depicts the legendary figure Pan Lang, known in Japan as Han Rō, a hermit associated with the Song dynasty poet Kou Zhun. The composition follows the traditional format of a folding fan, which dictates the curved orientation of the scene. Shikibu Terutada employs a restrained ink wash technique to capture the subject riding a donkey, a common motif in Zen-influenced art representing the journey of the scholar or recluse.
The figure of Pan Lang is rendered with fluid, calligraphic brushwork. His robes are suggested through minimal lines, allowing the negative space of the paper to define his form. The donkey is depicted with darker, more concentrated ink, providing a visual anchor for the composition. To the left, a cluster of bamboo and a rock formation are sketched with quick, decisive strokes, grounding the figure in a natural setting. The background features a subtle wash of gold, which provides a warm, atmospheric quality to the work.
Shikibu Terutada was an artist active during the mid-16th century, associated with the Kanto region. His work often reflects the influence of earlier Chinese ink painting traditions, adapted to the specific requirements of Japanese decorative formats. The use of the fan shape requires a careful balance of positive and negative space, a challenge Terutada meets by placing the primary subject slightly off-centre. The red seal at the lower left provides a point of visual contrast, confirming the artist's hand. This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where simplicity and economy of line were prized for their ability to convey the essence of a subject without unnecessary detail. It is a fine example of the intersection between literary narrative and the minimalist traditions of Japanese ink painting.
