A decorative panel by Maurice Denis depicting the marriage of Eros and Psyche, rendered in the characteristic flat, rhythmic style of the Nabis movement.
This work is the fifth panel in a series commissioned by the Russian collector Ivan Morozov for his Moscow mansion. Maurice Denis, a central figure of the Nabis group, depicts the final scene of the myth of Cupid and Psyche. The narrative focuses on the moment Jupiter grants immortality to Psyche, allowing her to marry Eros within the assembly of the gods.
Denis employs a decorative approach, favouring flat areas of colour and rhythmic lines over traditional modelling. The composition is framed by a floral arch, which creates a sense of enclosure and draws the eye toward the central figure of Jupiter. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner, echoing classical relief sculpture while maintaining the stylistic characteristics of the early twentieth-century French avant-garde. The palette is composed of soft blues, greens, and warm flesh tones, which contribute to the dreamlike quality of the scene.
Unlike the more aggressive techniques of his contemporaries, Denis sought a synthesis between religious subject matter and modern decorative principles. The background features a stylised view of the Mediterranean, a recurring motif in his work that reflects his attachment to the light and atmosphere of the southern coast. The inclusion of cypress trees and carefully placed floral arrangements adds to the structured, theatrical nature of the composition. This series represents a significant moment in the artist's career, demonstrating his ability to adapt classical mythology to the requirements of modern interior decoration. The work remains a clear example of the Nabis interest in the relationship between the painted surface and the architectural space it occupies.
