Description
Papa Stour Island is defined by a sheer grassy headland and slender sea stack, rising above clear turquoise water and a rock-strewn shore in northern light.
The cliff face is broken into vertical bands of ochre, slate and pale stone, capped by a broad sweep of green turf. At its base, dark slabs and small pools meet water painted in shifting blue-green planes. A narrow stack stands offshore beside white foam, while pink flowers appear among the lower foreground grasses and cloud banks gather over the open sea.
Visitors to Papa Stour Island may recognise the exposed edge of a day spent watching the water from the cliffs. For island residents, the stack and folded rock can feel like a fixed part of the coast in changing conditions. This image gives the headland its full height, following the shoreline from flowered grass to the bright water beyond.
