A serene coastal view of the dunes at Paramé, captured with the soft, atmospheric brushwork characteristic of Maximilien Luce's Neo-Impressionist period.
Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure in the Neo-Impressionist circle, painted this coastal view during his time in Brittany. The work depicts the dunes of Paramé, a commune near Saint-Malo, capturing the specific light and atmosphere of the French coastline. Luce, who was closely associated with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, often applied his interest in optical colour theory to his subjects, though his approach here remains more fluid and painterly than the strict pointillist method.
The composition is divided between the expansive, light-filled sky and the textured, grassy incline of the dunes. Two small, modest structures sit atop the rise, providing a sense of scale against the vastness of the sea. The water is rendered in shades of turquoise and pale blue, suggesting a calm, breezy day. Luce uses a palette dominated by greens, ochres, and soft blues, applying paint with visible, rhythmic brushstrokes that convey the movement of the wind across the vegetation.
Unlike his earlier, more urban industrial scenes, this piece reflects the artist's appreciation for the natural environment. The light is diffused, typical of the northern French coast, and the lack of sharp edges creates a sense of atmospheric depth. The painting captures a quiet moment in a region that attracted many artists of the period, drawn by the rugged beauty of the Breton shore. This print reproduces the textures of the original oil application, allowing for a clear view of the artist's technique and his careful observation of the coastal terrain.
