A classic colour lithograph by Henri Rivière, capturing a panoramic view of Paris from Montmartre with the stylistic influence of Japanese woodblock prints.
Henri Rivière, a central figure in the late nineteenth-century French printmaking scene, produced this work as part of his series titled 'Les Paysages parisiens'. The image captures a view of Paris from the heights of Montmartre, a vantage point that offers a panoramic perspective of the city rooftops. Rivière employs a muted palette and clean outlines, techniques heavily influenced by the aesthetic principles of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints. This stylistic choice allows for a clear separation of planes, guiding the viewer from the immediate foreground, where two dogs interact on a cobblestone path, to the distant, hazy horizon of the city.
The composition is structured around the steep incline of the street, which draws the eye downward toward the city centre. Smoke rises from numerous chimneys, suggesting the industrial activity of the era while adding texture to the atmospheric sky. Two figures in traditional habits are visible near a staircase, providing a sense of scale and local character to the scene. The use of flat colour areas and simplified forms reflects the artist's interest in decorative graphic design, a departure from the more painterly approaches common in contemporary Impressionist works.
Rivière was closely associated with the Chat Noir cabaret, where he directed the famous shadow theatre. His experience with stage lighting and silhouette design informs the clarity of this print. The work functions as a visual record of the urban environment at the turn of the century, documenting the architectural density of Paris. By focusing on the interplay between the foreground elements and the sprawling city beyond, Rivière creates a balanced composition that prioritises graphic harmony over realistic detail. This print remains a representative example of how European artists integrated Eastern artistic concepts into their depictions of Western urban life.
