A delicate etching by Félix Bracquemond, designed as a study for the Haviland 'Service Parisien' dinnerware, capturing a serene waterside scene.
This etching is a preparatory study for the famous 'Service Parisien', a dinner service commissioned by the porcelain manufacturer Haviland. Félix Bracquemond, a central figure in the French etching revival, designed this series during the height of the Japonisme movement. His work reflects a shift in European decorative arts, moving away from heavy ornamentation toward the minimalist, asymmetrical compositions found in Japanese woodblock prints.
The image depicts a quiet waterside scene. A bird rests on a branch to the right, while reeds occupy the left foreground. A flock of birds migrates across the upper portion of the frame, providing a sense of motion against the stillness of the water. Bracquemond employs a delicate, precise line quality, typical of his mastery of the etching needle. The composition is circular, designed specifically to fit the curvature of a dinner plate, yet it maintains a sense of open space that allows the subject to breathe.
Bracquemond was instrumental in introducing Japanese aesthetics to French artists. By incorporating motifs such as flora and fauna into functional objects, he bridged the gap between fine art and industrial design. This print captures the essence of his approach: a focus on natural observation, clean lines, and a balanced, airy arrangement. The inclusion of registration marks on the sides of the print reveals its nature as a working document, providing a glimpse into the technical process behind the final ceramic production. It is a study of restraint, capturing a fleeting moment of natural peace through minimal mark-making.
