An elegant etching by Félix Bracquemond, originally designed for the Haviland 'Service Parisien' dinnerware, featuring birds and blossoms in a style influenced by Japanese art.
This etching is a component of the ambitious 'Service Parisien', a dinner service commissioned by the porcelain manufacturer Haviland and Co. in the 1870s. Félix Bracquemond, a central figure in the revival of etching in France, designed the decorative motifs for this service, drawing heavily upon the aesthetic principles of Japanese woodblock prints. The composition demonstrates a departure from traditional Western perspective, favouring an asymmetrical arrangement of natural elements across the ceramic surface.
In this specific plate, titled 'Night', Bracquemond depicts a delicate branch laden with blossoms and birds, which arches across the upper portion of the frame. Below, a small group of waterfowl occupies the lower foreground, rendered with precise, economical lines. The open space between these elements is balanced by a subtle, atmospheric treatment of the sky and a distant horizon line. The work reflects the period's fascination with nature as a subject for decorative arts, moving away from rigid academic compositions toward a more fluid, observational approach.
Bracquemond’s technique here is characterised by clean, deliberate marks that define form without excessive shading. The influence of ukiyo-e is evident in the placement of the subjects and the use of negative space, which allows the white of the paper to function as an integral part of the design. This piece provides insight into the intersection of fine art printmaking and industrial design during the late nineteenth century, where the boundaries between the two were frequently blurred by artists seeking to bring high-quality aesthetic experiences into the domestic sphere.
