August Macke (1887-1914) was a German Expressionist painter, one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). His work is characterised by its bright colours, simplified forms, and interest in depicting everyday life. Macke was killed in action during World War I at the age of 27. 'Parkway' depicts a group of figures strolling along a path, possibly in a park or garden. The figures are rendered in a simplified, almost abstract style, with bold brushstrokes and a limited colour palette. The composition is divided into distinct zones of colour, with the green foliage of the trees contrasting against the red-orange of the path and the dark figures. The painting conveys a sense of movement and energy, capturing the fleeting impressions of modern urban life.
