A sophisticated Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai, reinterpreting the legendary Buddhist hermits Hanshan and Shide as two elegant women.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai belongs to the mitate-e genre, a form of parody where classical themes are reinterpreted through the lens of contemporary Edo-period life. The original subjects, Hanshan and Shide, are legendary Chinese Buddhist hermits often depicted in traditional ink painting as dishevelled figures, one holding a scroll and the other a broom. Koryūsai replaces these eccentric monks with two elegant women in fashionable kimono, transposing the spiritual narrative into a domestic or leisurely setting.
The composition is balanced and spare, typical of Koryūsai's refined aesthetic. One woman reclines on the floor, her attention fixed upon a long scroll, while her companion stands nearby, holding a broom. The artist uses clean, precise lines to define the folds of the kimono and the gentle posture of the figures. The colour palette remains restrained, allowing the patterns on the garments to provide visual interest without overwhelming the scene. The background is left largely empty, which directs the viewer's focus to the interaction between the two women and their props.
Koryūsai was a samurai who turned to printmaking, and his work often displays a high degree of technical control. This piece demonstrates his ability to blend high-culture references with the popular imagery of the pleasure quarters. By adopting the iconography of the two hermits, the print invites the viewer to recognise the humour in the substitution. It is a sophisticated example of how Ukiyo-e artists engaged with historical motifs, adapting them to suit the tastes of the urban merchant class. The print serves as a record of the period's fashion and its playful approach to classical literature and religious art.
