A classic nishiki-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, depicting a contemporary beauty in a playful parody of the legendary poet Lin Heqing.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu belongs to the genre of mitate-e, or parody pictures, which were popular during the mid-Edo period. Harunobu frequently reinterpreted classical Chinese and Japanese themes by substituting traditional figures with contemporary beauties of the Yoshiwara pleasure district. In this composition, the artist replaces the historical figure of Lin Heqing, a Song dynasty poet known for his reclusive life spent tending to plum trees and cranes, with a young woman carrying water buckets on a shoulder pole.
The figure is dressed in a soft orange kimono, her posture echoing the grace of the cranes that accompany her. The background is simplified, focusing the viewer on the interaction between the woman and the birds. The print utilises the nishiki-e technique, or brocade print, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single image. This development transformed the aesthetic of Japanese prints, moving away from the limited palettes of earlier eras toward a more nuanced and painterly approach.
Harunobu is credited with popularising this multi-colour printing process. His work is characterised by slender, ethereal figures and a delicate use of line. The composition avoids excessive detail, allowing the negative space to balance the figures. The cranes, symbols of longevity and fidelity, are rendered with careful attention to their plumage and movement. This print reflects the playful intellectual culture of the period, where the audience was expected to recognise the classical source material being subverted. The work remains a fine example of the technical and stylistic shifts that defined the golden age of Ukiyo-e, demonstrating the artist's ability to blend historical allusion with the fashion and charm of his own time.
