A refined Ukiyo-e painting by Kawamata Tsuneyuki, depicting a contemporary Edo-period interpretation of the literary figure Murasaki from the Tale of Genji.
This work by Kawamata Tsuneyuki depicts a scene inspired by the fifth chapter of the Tale of Genji, titled Wakamurasaki or Lavender. Tsuneyuki, a painter active during the early eighteenth century, was known for his work within the Ukiyo-e tradition, often focusing on the depiction of beautiful women, or bijin-ga. In this composition, the artist presents a contemporary interpretation of the literary figure Murasaki, placing her within a setting that reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the Edo period rather than the Heian era of the original text.
The figure stands in a graceful posture, wearing a layered kimono adorned with pine motifs. The garment features a complex arrangement of stripes and floral patterns, demonstrating the attention to textile detail common in the period. The background remains relatively sparse, using a muted, earthy tone that draws focus to the central figure. A cherry blossom tree extends from the left, providing a seasonal marker that connects the image to the themes of transience and beauty found in classical Japanese literature. To the left, a small birdcage rests on a low stand, a detail that adds a domestic element to the scene.
Tsuneyuki employs a refined line quality, characteristic of his training in the Kano school before his transition to Ukiyo-e. The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned slightly off-centre to create a sense of movement. The use of colour is restrained, relying on soft hues to define the robes and the blossoms. This piece functions as a parody or mitate-e, a popular genre in which classical themes were reimagined through the lens of contemporary life. By updating the setting and attire, the artist invites the viewer to engage with the Tale of Genji in a manner relevant to the social and cultural climate of the eighteenth century.
