The original wooden structure was replaced by a stone priory in the 12th century, which expanded over the following centuries. The priory was dissolved under the order of Henry VIII in 1538, and its buildings were subsequently destroyed. Today, only fragments of the original structure remain. Girtin's watercolour captures the skeletal remains of the Gothic architecture. The artist's delicate brushwork and muted palette evoke a sense of melancholy and the passage of time. A lone figure stands in the foreground, providing a sense of scale and further emphasising the ruinous state of the priory.
