A powerful example of Zen calligraphy by the Japanese monk Jiun Onkō, featuring characters from the Inscription on Trust in the Mind.
Jiun Onkō, a prominent Shingon Buddhist monk and scholar, produced this work of calligraphy during the Edo period. The piece features characters from the Xinxinming, or Inscription on Trust in the Mind, a foundational text attributed to the third Chan patriarch, Sengcan. The text explores the nature of non-duality and the liberation found in letting go of conceptual attachments.
Jiun Onkō is recognised for his distinct approach to the brush. His style often departs from the rigid standards of professional calligraphers, favouring a raw, unmediated expression that aligns with the Zen tradition of direct transmission. The ink application here demonstrates a deliberate variation in pressure and speed. Some strokes appear dry and frayed, revealing the texture of the paper, while others are saturated and bold. This contrast creates a rhythmic visual experience that mirrors the meditative quality of the text itself.
The composition is sparse, allowing the negative space of the paper to function as an active element. The characters are not merely written but are formed through a physical engagement with the medium. The placement of the red seals provides a subtle balance to the heavy black ink, grounding the composition. As a practitioner of the Hōryū-ji school, Jiun Onkō sought to return to the original teachings of Buddhism, and his calligraphy reflects this desire for authenticity and clarity. This print captures the nuances of his brushwork, preserving the energy and spontaneity of the original ink on paper. It serves as a study in the intersection of linguistic meaning and visual form, where the act of writing becomes a practice of mindfulness.
