Patna follows the River Doon through East Ayrshire, a village with coalfield origins where wooded riverbanks and open green slopes now frame an inland view of southern Scotland.
William Fullarton established Patna in 1802 to house workers employed on his estate's coalfields. The village straddles the traditional districts of Carrick and Kyle, beside the River Doon, and takes its name from the Indian city associated with Fullarton's family connections.
The river bends through a green valley below rows of pale houses. Trees gather along its banks and around a small stone bridge, while broad fields climb towards smooth brown and gold hills. Purple vegetation and grey rocks occupy the nearest slope. Strong sunshine picks out the white walls and yellow green pasture, suggesting late summer as the upper moor begins to change colour.
