A fine colour aquatint engraving depicting a scene from the classic novel Paul et Virginie, rendered with the delicate tonal qualities of late eighteenth-century French printmaking.
This colour aquatint by Charles-Melchior Descourtis depicts a scene from the popular 1788 novel 'Paul et Virginie' by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. The print is based on an original composition by the painter Jean-Frédéric Schall. It captures a moment of emotional reunion within a rugged, natural setting. The figures of Paul and Virginie are shown seated on the ground, accompanied by their dog, while a man approaches them with open arms. The composition employs the soft, tonal qualities characteristic of the aquatint process, which allowed for the subtle layering of colour to mimic the appearance of a wash drawing or watercolour.
Descourtis was a master of this technique, often working in collaboration with other artists to translate their paintings into print form for a wider audience. The inclusion of the French text at the base of the image provides the narrative context, detailing the characters' exhaustion and their relief upon being found. The scene reflects the late eighteenth-century interest in sentimental literature and the idealisation of nature, themes that permeated the cultural output of the period. The figures are rendered with a focus on their expressive gestures and the dramatic lighting of the forest environment. The print serves as a fine example of the high level of technical skill involved in French colour printing during the late eighteenth century, where the aim was to achieve a painterly effect through the precise application of multiple copper plates.
