A striking woodcut by Auguste Louis Lepère, depicting a Russian peasant in a bold, high-contrast style that emphasises the dignity of manual labour.
Auguste Louis Lepère was a central figure in the revival of wood engraving in France during the late nineteenth century. His technical mastery allowed him to bridge the gap between commercial illustration and fine art printmaking. This woodcut, titled Paysan russe, demonstrates his ability to utilise high-contrast black and white forms to convey narrative and character. The composition focuses on a solitary figure, a Russian peasant, captured in the act of sowing. The stark, bold lines define the silhouette of the man against a simplified, flat horizon, drawing the viewer's attention to the physical gesture of the work.
Lepère often employed a graphic economy that favoured strong shapes over excessive detail. In this print, the heavy ink application creates a sense of weight and presence. The texture of the wood grain is occasionally suggested through the direction of the cutting, though the overall effect remains clean and direct. The figure occupies the foreground, his posture suggesting the repetitive, rhythmic nature of agricultural labour. The background is minimal, consisting of a few horizontal lines to denote the ploughed earth and a small structure in the distance, which provides a sense of scale without distracting from the primary subject.
This work reflects the broader interest in rural life and the dignity of manual labour that occupied many artists of the period. Lepère avoids sentimentality, choosing instead to present the subject with a direct, almost sculptural clarity. The print is a fine example of the artist's skill in balancing negative space with bold, expressive mark-making. It remains a clear representation of the woodcut medium's capacity for graphic power, stripped of unnecessary ornamentation. The piece is well-suited for those who appreciate the intersection of traditional craft and modern graphic design.
