A 1913 Synthetic Cubist still life by Juan Gris, featuring a geometric arrangement of fruit and newspaper on a table.
Juan Gris, a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism, produced this work in 1913. The composition demonstrates his analytical approach to the still life genre, where objects are deconstructed into geometric planes and reassembled to create a new visual reality. Unlike the earlier, more fragmented works of his contemporaries, Gris maintains a clear sense of structure and order within the frame.
The painting features a collection of fruit, including pears and grapes, arranged upon a table. Gris employs a palette of ochre, black, and red, which creates a rhythmic contrast across the surface. The background incorporates a chequered pattern, a recurring motif in his work, which serves to flatten the pictorial space and integrate the objects with their surroundings. The inclusion of a newspaper, rendered with characteristic typographic elements, anchors the composition in the everyday environment of a Parisian café.
Technically, the work displays the artist's precision. The forms are defined by sharp edges and overlapping planes, yet the underlying subject remains legible. The light sources are multiple and arbitrary, a common device in Cubist practice to avoid traditional modelling. By manipulating the perspective, Gris invites the viewer to observe the objects from several angles simultaneously. This print captures the clarity of his brushwork and the balance of his colour choices, offering a clear view into the formal rigour that defined his contribution to modern art.
