This Impressionist painting by Camille Pissarro depicts a peasant working in a field, rendered with short brushstrokes and earthy tones, capturing the essence of rural French life.
Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter. He is known for his paintings of rural and urban French life, particularly his landscapes. Pissarro was a mentor to many artists, including Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin. He was the only artist to exhibit at all eight Impressionist exhibitions from 1874 to 1886. 'Peasant with Hoe' depicts a figure working in a field. The composition is built from short, broken brushstrokes of colour, typical of Impressionist technique. The palette is dominated by earthy tones of ochre, brown, and green, with touches of blue and red. The figure is rendered with a sense of movement and energy, capturing the physical exertion of agricultural labour. The scene conveys a sense of the French countryside.
