This movement sought to move away from Western European academic traditions by drawing inspiration from Russian folk art, icons, and lubok prints. The composition depicts two figures engaged in daily labour, likely washing laundry by a stream. The forms are simplified and robust, reflecting the artist's interest in the physical presence of the peasantry.

The colour palette is bold and direct, utilising high-contrast tones that emphasise the flat, decorative quality of the scene. The woman in the foreground wears a patterned skirt, rendered with thick, block-like strokes that suggest a textile design influence.
