Description
Penicuik sits among Midlothian's green fields below the Pentlands, where pale industrial roofs and town houses reveal a working settlement within a broad landscape of wooded boundaries and distant hills.
In Midlothian, Penicuik's history is closely tied to papermaking along the Esk. Agnes Campbell established a mill at Valleyfield in 1709, using water power and clean spring water. Within a century, ten mills operated between Penicuik and Lasswade, shaping the area's working landscape.
Rock and heather occupy the near slope above Penicuik, with red roofs and long pale industrial buildings spread beyond the green fields. Tree belts divide the foreground pasture, while rounded blue hills form the distance. Cream clouds leave clear gaps overhead. The lush grass and full trees suggest summer, with the elevated viewpoint showing the town as one part of a much wider rural setting.
