Alfred Wallis, a former Cornish fisherman and scrap merchant, began painting in his late sixties following the death of his wife. Without formal training, he utilised whatever materials were available, often painting on discarded cardboard boxes or scraps of wood. This work depicts the maritime activity of Penzance Harbour, rendered with the directness and lack of conventional perspective that define his output.

Wallis prioritised the relative importance of objects over their physical distance from the viewer. Ships are arranged across the surface to convey their function and presence rather than their exact location in space. The harbour wall acts as a structural anchor, separating the vessels from the churning, textured sea. His palette is restricted, relying on household paints, which contributes to the raw, immediate quality of the scene. The irregular shape of the support, a hallmark of his practice, reflects the original form of the salvaged material he chose to work upon.

His approach to marine subjects was informed by decades of experience at sea. He did not aim for photographic accuracy, but rather a memory-based representation of the vessels he knew well, such as trawlers and steamships. This lack of artifice caught the attention of Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, who visited St Ives in 1928 and recognised the authenticity in his work. Wallis remains a significant figure in British modernism, not for his technical refinement, but for his ability to translate the essence of coastal life into a singular, unmediated visual language. His work offers a glimpse into a vanished era of Cornish maritime industry, captured with an economy of means that remains compelling to contemporary observers.
