A delicate Qing Dynasty fan painting featuring a blooming peony, rendered in soft ink and colour washes by the artist Wang Wu.
This fan painting by Wang Wu, a notable artist of the early Qing Dynasty, captures the delicate form of a peony in bloom. Wang Wu was known for his mastery of the bird-and-flower genre, a tradition that prioritised the observation of natural subjects through a refined, scholarly lens. The composition is adapted to the fan format, with the stems and blossoms radiating from the lower left to fill the curved space.
The artist employs a technique of light washes and controlled brushwork to define the petals. The soft pink tones of the peony are balanced by the muted greens and greys of the foliage. The ink work on the branches provides a skeletal structure, grounding the lighter floral elements. The negative space of the paper remains largely untouched, a common feature in traditional Chinese painting that allows the subject to breathe within the frame.
Wang Wu, also known by his courtesy name Qinchen, was a native of Changzhou. His work often reflects the literati aesthetic, which valued personal expression and technical precision over mere imitation of nature. The inclusion of calligraphy and red seals on the right side of the fan is characteristic of the period, identifying the artist and adding a layer of historical provenance to the piece. This print preserves the subtle gradients of the original ink and pigment, offering a clear view of the brushwork and the specific texture of the paper surface. It is a representative example of seventeenth-century Chinese decorative art, where the functional object of the fan serves as a canvas for poetic observation.
