An oil painting by John James Audubon depicting two Peregrine Falcons with their prey, rendered with precise attention to avian anatomy and natural behaviour.
John James Audubon, primarily known for his monumental publication The Birds of America, also produced a series of oil paintings that demonstrate his technical skill beyond the medium of watercolour and print. This work, depicting Peregrine Falcons, captures the predatory nature of the species with directness. The composition focuses on two falcons standing over their prey, a duck, upon a rugged, elevated terrain. The birds are rendered with attention to the texture of their plumage and the sharp, predatory anatomy of their beaks and talons.
Audubon utilised a palette of earthy browns, ochres, and muted greys to ground the subjects within their environment. The background features a distant, atmospheric horizon, which provides a sense of scale and place. Unlike his more clinical, static ornithological illustrations, this oil painting allows for a more dramatic interpretation of avian behaviour. The interaction between the falcons and the fallen prey is depicted with a realism that reflects the artist's interest in the raw, unvarnished aspects of the natural world. The lighting is soft, suggesting an overcast day, which helps to unify the figures with the landscape. This piece offers a view into the broader artistic practice of a man whose career was defined by his observation of North American wildlife. It remains a clear example of nineteenth-century natural history art, where scientific observation meets the dramatic sensibilities of the Romantic period.
