A modernist portrait by Lasar Segall, featuring a subject in profile against a geometric, abstract background of warm, earthy tones.
Lasar Segall, a Lithuanian-born artist who settled in Brazil, produced this portrait of Zulmira during a period when his work shifted towards a synthesis of European Expressionism and the social realities of his adopted home. The painting depicts the subject in profile, a classic compositional choice that allows the artist to focus on the silhouette and the sculptural quality of the head and neck.
The background is constructed from geometric planes of colour, suggesting an interior space or a curtained window, yet these forms remain largely abstract. This approach flattens the pictorial space, pushing the figure forward and creating a tension between the representational portrait and the decorative arrangement of shapes. The palette relies on warm, earthy tones, including ochre, terracotta, and deep reds, which contrast with the darker skin tone of the subject.
Segall applies paint with a deliberate, visible texture. The subject wears a garment featuring a dotted pattern, which adds a rhythmic element to the lower portion of the composition. Small, stylised botanical motifs appear within the white geometric shapes flanking the figure, introducing a subtle organic element to the otherwise structured environment. The work reflects the artist's interest in the human condition and his ability to integrate modernist techniques with a sensitive approach to his subjects. By avoiding excessive detail, Segall captures a sense of quietude and presence. The painting remains a representative example of his mature style, where the influence of his earlier years in the German avant-garde meets the light and colour palette of Brazil.
