A detailed 18th-century engraving by Louis Jacob, depicting the mythological rescue of Andromeda by Perseus, based on a painting by Paolo Veronese.
This print by Louis Jacob depicts the classical myth of Perseus and Andromeda. The composition is based on an original painting by the Venetian master Paolo Veronese, which was held in the French royal collection. Jacob, a French engraver, translated the painterly qualities of the original work into the precise, linear language of the burin and etching needle.
The scene captures the moment of intervention. Perseus is shown mid-air, descending with sword drawn to confront the sea monster that threatens Andromeda. Andromeda is chained to a rocky outcrop on the right, her posture conveying a mixture of alarm and resignation. The sea monster, rendered with imaginative, scaled textures, emerges from the water in the foreground. In the distance, a fortified city provides a sense of scale and narrative context.
Jacob employs a variety of hatching techniques to define form and shadow. The musculature of Perseus, the drapery of Andromeda, and the rugged surface of the rocks are articulated through controlled line work. The sky and water are treated with finer, lighter strokes to suggest atmospheric depth and the movement of the sea. The inclusion of the original French inscription at the base of the print identifies the source material and the location of the painting in the Cabinet du Roy, a common practice for reproductive prints of the eighteenth century. This work demonstrates the technical skill required to interpret large-scale oil paintings for a wider audience, preserving the dramatic tension and compositional balance of the Veronese original through the medium of printmaking.
