A dramatic depiction of the Greek myth, featuring the rescue of Andromeda by Perseus, painted by the Venetian master Titian in the mid-16th century.
Titian painted this work as part of the 'poesie' series commissioned by Philip II of Spain. The composition depicts the Greek myth of Perseus descending from the heavens to rescue Andromeda, who is chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster. Titian employs a dynamic diagonal arrangement, contrasting the static, vulnerable figure of Andromeda on the left with the aggressive, downward trajectory of the hero on the right.
The painting demonstrates the artist's mastery of colour and light, particularly in the treatment of the stormy sky and the turbulent water. The figure of Andromeda is rendered with soft, luminous flesh tones, which stand out against the darker, more atmospheric surroundings. Perseus, captured in mid-air, is depicted with a sense of urgency and movement, his red drapery fluttering behind him. The sea monster emerges from the depths, its form partially obscured by the churning waves, adding a sense of immediate danger to the scene.
This work is characteristic of Titian's later period, where he moved away from precise outlines in favour of a more painterly approach. The brushwork is loose and expressive, allowing the forms to emerge from the shadows through the application of paint rather than rigid structure. The narrative is condensed into a single moment of high tension, focusing on the physical interaction between the figures and their environment. The painting remains a significant example of Venetian Renaissance art, reflecting the period's interest in classical mythology and the expressive potential of oil paint.
