Description
A detailed 17th-century etching by Antonio Tempesta depicting the mythological scene of Perseus with the head of Medusa.
This etching by Antonio Tempesta depicts the aftermath of the encounter between the hero Perseus and the Gorgon Medusa. The composition is organised around the central figure of the fallen Medusa, whose headless body lies upon the ground. To the left, the winged horse Pegasus stands in a state of agitation, while Perseus occupies the right side of the frame, holding the severed head of the Gorgon aloft. The scene is rendered with the characteristic precision of Tempesta, a Florentine artist known for his prolific output of prints and his ability to capture dynamic movement within a static medium. Tempesta was a student of Santi di Tito and later worked under the influence of the Flemish printmaker Jan van der Straet. His work often drew upon classical mythology and biblical narratives, which he translated into accessible visual formats for a wide audience. This particular print belongs to a series illustrating Ovid's Metamorphoses, a text that provided a wealth of subject matter for artists of the period. The etching technique allows for a clear delineation of form, from the musculature of the figures to the texture of the horse's mane and the rocky terrain of the background. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Anguiparum Medusae caput praescindit Perseus', translates to 'Perseus cuts off the snake-haired head of Medusa'. This text anchors the image within the tradition of humanist education, where classical stories were frequently revisited and reinterpreted. The work demonstrates the artist's interest in narrative clarity and his technical proficiency with the etching needle, which he used to create varied line weights that suggest volume and shadow. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged to guide the viewer's eye across the dramatic events of the myth.
