A detailed historical etching by Sidney L. Smith, depicting the 1768 arrival of the British fleet in Boston Harbour with period-accurate cartographic elements.
This work by Sidney L. Smith is a meticulous reproduction of the historical 1768 engraving depicting the arrival of the British fleet in Boston Harbour. Smith, an American etcher and engraver known for his work in book illustration and historical documentation, captures the cartographic and narrative style common to eighteenth-century broadsides. The composition features a panoramic view of the harbour, populated by numerous naval vessels, set against a sky filled with decorative elements.
Central to the piece is a flowing ribbon banner bearing the title, accompanied by a small figure. To the left, a palm tree motif frames a dedication, while the right side displays an elaborate cartouche containing an explanation of the fleet's positions, complete with military iconography such as drums, cannons, and flags. The aesthetic reflects the Colonial Revival interest in early American history, prioritising the preservation of visual records from the pre-Revolutionary period. The etching technique allows for fine detail in the rigging of the ships and the topographical features of the islands within the harbour. The inclusion of the legend and the formalised arrangement of the decorative elements provides a clear sense of the original purpose of such prints, which served as both news and political commentary for the public of the time. Smith's interpretation maintains the character of the original source material while demonstrating his technical proficiency in the medium of etching.
