A detailed etching by Henry Louis Basan depicting the biblical healing of a lame man by Saint Peter and Saint John.
This etching by Henry Louis Basan depicts the biblical narrative of Saint Peter and Saint John healing a lame man at the gate of the temple. The composition draws heavily from the stylistic traditions of the Dutch Golden Age, specifically referencing the etching techniques of Rembrandt van Rijn. Basan, a publisher and engraver, produced this work as part of a broader effort to circulate classical compositions through the medium of print.
The scene is framed by a heavy architectural arch, which creates a sense of depth and directs the viewer towards the central figures. Peter and John stand in the foreground, their forms rendered with precise, controlled lines that define the folds of their garments and the texture of their skin. The lame man sits at their feet, his posture conveying a sense of anticipation and vulnerability. In the background, the temple architecture is suggested through lighter, more delicate hatching, which contrasts with the darker, more defined figures in the foreground. This use of varying line weight helps to establish a clear spatial hierarchy within the print.
Basan demonstrates a technical proficiency in managing the tonal range of the etching. The shadows within the archway are deep and atmospheric, while the light source appears to emanate from the temple courtyard, illuminating the figures and creating a sense of drama. The work is a fine example of nineteenth-century reproductive printmaking, where the artist sought to capture the emotional weight and narrative clarity of earlier masters. The attention to detail in the architectural elements and the expressive gestures of the figures demonstrate a disciplined approach to the medium, resulting in a print that balances technical precision with narrative storytelling.
