A woodblock print by Ohara Koson, depicting a pheasant perched on a branch. The artwork showcases the artist's skill in capturing the natural details and textures of the bird's plumage.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist associated with the Shin-hanga movement, which revitalised traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock printing. He is known for his depictions of birds and flowers (kachō-e). Koson initially trained in painting but later shifted to woodblock print design, working with publishers such as Watanabe Shōzaburō. His work gained popularity both in Japan and abroad. He also used the names Ohara Hōson and Shōson. His prints are characterised by their naturalistic detail and subtle colour gradations. This print shows a pheasant perched on a branch. The bird's plumage is rendered with careful attention to texture and colour, with shades of brown, red, and gold. The branch, with its leaves, adds a naturalistic element to the composition. The background is a soft, neutral tone, allowing the bird to stand out. The print exemplifies the refined techniques of Japanese woodblock printing, with its delicate lines and subtle colour variations.
