This circular section of a fresco is by Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, 1483-1520), and comes from the 'Stanza della Segnatura' (Room of the Signatura) in the Vatican. Painted between 1509 and 1511, the 'Stanza della Segnatura' was the first of the rooms to be decorated by Raphael in the Vatican. It is believed to have been Pope Julius II's library and private office. The room's decoration reflects the Pope's interests, with themes of theology, philosophy, poetry, and law. The fresco depicts a female figure, representing Philosophy, seated on a throne. She is flanked by two putti and two herm figures. The putto on the left carries a scroll inscribed 'CAVSA RVM' (the causes of things), while the putto on the right holds a scroll with 'COGNITIO' (knowledge). Philosophy holds two books, labelled 'Moralis' and 'Naturalis'. The composition is set against a mosaic background, giving the impression of a tondo within the larger fresco cycle. The colours are muted, with blues, reds, and greens predominating, typical of Raphael's palette.
