A detailed ink illustration by Konstantin Somov, depicting an aristocratic picnic scene in a rococo-inspired style.
This ink illustration by Konstantin Somov originates from the 1918 edition of 'Le Livre de la Marquise', a collection of erotic and rococo-inspired literature and art. Somov, a founding member of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, frequently returned to the aesthetics of the eighteenth century. His work often explores themes of artifice, masquerade, and the refined leisure of the aristocracy.
The composition depicts a group of figures in period dress enjoying an outdoor gathering. A central female figure, dressed in an elaborate gown with a voluminous skirt, stands in the foreground while holding a lead attached to a small dog. Behind her, other figures recline on the grass, engaged in conversation or dining. The background features a wooded park setting, rendered with fine, rhythmic pen strokes that suggest the texture of foliage and the dappled light of a summer day.
Somov employs a highly controlled line quality, characteristic of his graphic work. The drawing avoids heavy shading, relying instead on a dense network of marks to define form and space. This approach creates a sense of decorative unity across the surface. The scene captures a specific mood of detached observation, common in Somov's depictions of historical pastiche. By referencing the visual language of the rococo period, the artist constructs a world that feels both nostalgic and slightly detached from reality. The attention to costume detail and the stylised posture of the figures reflect the artist's interest in the theatricality of social interaction. This print offers a clear view into the graphic precision and thematic preoccupations of the Russian Silver Age, where artists often looked back to the eighteenth century as a source of stylistic inspiration.
