A woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei from the Dōchū gafu series, depicting travellers and a horse on a ferry boat along the Tōkaidō road.
This woodblock print originates from the Dōchū gafu, or Picture Album of Road Pictures, a series by the Japanese artist Totoya Hokkei. Hokkei was a student of Katsushika Hokusai, and his work reflects the technical precision and observational skill associated with the Ukiyo-e school during the Edo period. The print depicts a scene along the Tōkaidō, the primary route connecting Edo and Kyoto, which served as a frequent subject for artists of the era.
The composition spans two pages, showing a ferry boat crossing a body of water. On the left, a boatman uses a pole to navigate the vessel, while passengers sit amidst their belongings. On the right, a horse is positioned within the boat, a detail that captures the practical realities of travel during the nineteenth century. The artist employs a restrained palette, using soft washes of colour to define the water, the distant hills, and the sky. The line work is precise, focusing on the forms of the figures and the structure of the boat rather than excessive ornamentation.
This work belongs to the genre of travel imagery that became popular as the Tōkaidō road grew in importance for both official business and leisure travel. Hokkei provides a glimpse into the daily life of travellers, documenting the modes of transport and the atmosphere of the journey. The print is notable for its balance and clarity, avoiding the dramatic exaggeration found in some contemporary works. It remains a clear example of the graphic traditions of the period, where the woodblock medium allowed for the reproduction of scenes for a wider audience of book and print collectors.
