A woodblock print from the 1802 series 'Ehon imayō sugata' by Utagawa Toyokuni I, depicting a woman by a boat under a crescent moon.
This woodblock print originates from the 'Ehon imayō sugata' (Picture Book of Modern Figures of Fashion), a publication produced by Utagawa Toyokuni I in 1802. Toyokuni I was a central figure in the Utagawa school, known for his contributions to the development of the bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) genre during the Edo period.
The composition depicts a solitary female figure standing near a boat at the water's edge. The scene is set at night, indicated by the crescent moon suspended in a dark, layered sky. The artist employs a restrained colour palette, relying on the precision of the woodblock lines to define the textures of the water, the wooden structure of the boat, and the folds of the woman's kimono. The background features a bridge and distant shoreline, providing a sense of spatial depth that is characteristic of the period's interest in atmospheric perspective.
Toyokuni I focused on the aesthetic of the contemporary urbanite, capturing the fashion and mannerisms of the time. The figure is rendered with the elongated proportions and graceful posture typical of his work. The print demonstrates the technical skill required for multi-block printing, where each colour is applied via a separate carved block. The balance between the dark, moody sky and the lighter, detailed foreground creates a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. This work provides a window into the visual culture of early nineteenth-century Japan, documenting both the stylistic preferences of the era and the technical mastery of the Utagawa school printmakers.
