A 1747 woodblock print by Nishikawa Sukenobu depicting women gathering shells, featuring elegant line work and integrated Japanese calligraphy.
This woodblock print originates from the 1747 publication 'Kyōkun chūkai ehon kai kasen', or 'Picture Book of Poems on Shells', by the Kyoto-based artist Nishikawa Sukenobu. Sukenobu was a prolific illustrator during the mid-Edo period, known for his contributions to the development of the ehon, or picture book, format. His work often focused on the daily lives of women, literature, and classical themes, presented with a refined, linear clarity that defined the Kyoto style of the era.
The composition depicts two women gathering shells along a shoreline, a subject that blends natural observation with poetic allusion. The figures are rendered in the characteristic style of the period, with delicate facial features and flowing robes adorned with subtle patterns. The surrounding environment, including the stylized waves and the shoreline, is executed with economical, rhythmic lines that suggest movement without the need for complex shading or colour. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy integrated into the upper sections of the print serves to contextualise the visual scene within a literary framework, as the text provides moral or poetic commentary on the act of shell gathering.
Sukenobu's approach to figure drawing is notable for its grace and balance. By avoiding the exaggerated proportions seen in later Ukiyo-e prints, he maintains a sense of poise and decorum. The print serves as an example of the high level of craftsmanship involved in 18th-century Japanese book production, where text and image were designed to function as a unified aesthetic experience. The paper texture and the crispness of the black ink lines reflect the quality of the original woodblock carving, capturing the aesthetic sensibilities of the Edo period through a focus on line, form, and narrative simplicity.
