A refined woodblock print by Kuwagata Keisai depicting a man from Nankin with a ram, showcasing the artist's signature minimalist line work.
This woodblock print by Kuwagata Keisai, also known as Kitao Masayoshi, depicts a scene of a man from Nankin (Nanjing) accompanied by a youth. The work reflects the artist's interest in foreign subjects and his mastery of the simplified, elegant line characteristic of his later career. Keisai was a pupil of Kitao Shigemasa and initially worked within the Ukiyo-e tradition, though he later developed a distinct, minimalist style that favoured clarity over the dense ornamentation common in the period.
The composition is balanced and sparse. The adult figure, wearing a distinctive cap and traditional attire, holds a rope attached to a ram. Beside him, a younger figure carries a basket containing a bird. The background is suggested through minimal, rhythmic lines that indicate rolling hills, providing a sense of space without overwhelming the primary subjects. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones of green, ochre, and muted red to define the clothing and the animal, allowing the clean outlines to remain the primary focus of the viewer's attention.
Kuwagata Keisai was highly regarded for his ability to capture the essence of his subjects with minimal strokes. This print is an example of his observational approach, which often drew upon the study of foreign visitors or historical accounts of life in China. The work demonstrates his transition away from the more decorative, busy compositions of his contemporaries towards a more refined, graphic sensibility. The paper texture and the subtle application of colour suggest a high-quality printing process, typical of the period's output for book illustrations or single-sheet prints. This piece offers a glimpse into the Edo-period fascination with the wider world, presented through the lens of a skilled draughtsman who prioritised form and narrative economy.
