A Yokohama-e woodblock print depicting an elephant carrying a foreign woman and child, reflecting the curiosity of mid-nineteenth-century Japan.
This woodblock print by Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of Japanese art that emerged following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859. These prints documented the arrival of foreigners, exotic animals, and new technologies, satisfying a public curiosity about the world beyond Japan.
The composition features an elephant, an animal rarely seen in Japan at the time, carrying a foreign woman and child. The figures are rendered with the characteristic flat perspective and bold outlines of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The woman wears Western-style dress, complete with a crinoline skirt and a parasol, reflecting the fascination with European fashion that permeated Japanese society during the Bakumatsu period. The text included in the print provides specific measurements and details about the animal, presenting the image as a form of visual reportage.
Yoshitoyo, a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, employs a balanced colour palette, using muted tones for the elephant and the background, while the clothing of the figures provides contrast. The print serves as a record of the cultural exchange occurring during the mid-nineteenth century. It captures the intersection of traditional Japanese printmaking techniques with the influx of international subjects. The work is a typical example of how artists of the period translated unfamiliar sights into the established visual language of the woodblock medium. By documenting such spectacles, artists provided the Japanese public with a window into the changing nature of global interactions during a period of rapid modernisation.
