A traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kitagawa Tsukimaro depicting a social gathering within the Edo-period pleasure quarters.
This woodblock print by Kitagawa Tsukimaro depicts a scene from the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters, a subject central to the Ukiyo-e tradition. The composition features a group of figures, including courtesans and their patrons, gathered in a domestic interior. The artist employs a balanced arrangement, placing the figures around a central low table that holds a miniature pine tree, a common symbol of longevity and good fortune in Japanese culture. To the left, a tiered food box and a platter with a fish suggest a celebratory meal or a formal gathering.
Tsukimaro, a student of the famous Kitagawa Utamaro, adopts the stylistic conventions of his teacher, particularly in the elongated facial features and the careful rendering of textile patterns. The figures wear elaborate kimono, with the artist using a muted palette of soft oranges, greys, and blacks to define the garments. The background is kept relatively simple, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction between the individuals. The print captures a specific social ritual, documenting the customs and fashion of the Edo period. The lines are precise, characteristic of the woodblock printing process, where each colour area is defined by a separate carved block. The overall effect is one of quiet observation, providing a glimpse into the social life of the urban elite during the early nineteenth century. The inclusion of cartouches with text identifies the specific figures, linking the image to contemporary theatre or literary references common in the prints of this era.
